Okinawa
Okinawa depends on US army, in terms of economy. Some people choose to subordinate,
because of economy. At least, it did so, when I lived in Uebaru, Naha-city, Okinawa.
In fact, Japan, the country itself, has same tendency.
Ordinal Japanese (including young people in Okinawa) do not know the history of Okinawa. I mean, how people were governed by US army after world war two.
No freedom, no democracy, but army and soldiers.
I know part of it, so, I can't imagine there is some "democracy" in middle east under US army.
